PURPOSE: In Japan, there are more than 9,000 home visiting nursing stations to provide nursing care at home. Due to the importance of these facilities, nursing students are required to have training at visiting nursing stations. The purpose of this study to clarify what kind of expectations for nursing students the practice supervisors conducting home care nursing practicums have.
METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from ten supervisors working at different home care settings. The data was analyzed qualitatively. This study was conducted with the approval of the University Ethics Committee.
RESULTS: Expectations of the practice supervisors for nursing students were categorized following seven,: Supervisors hoped to (a) feel the difficulties and the enjoyments of the home-visit nursing work and get to like it, (b) notice that there is no difference about the philosophy of nursing between in medical facilities and in homes, (c) feel the differences and the atmospheres of each persons’ daily life,(d) look at the work of visiting nurse carefully, (e) get through the practicum enjoyably, (f) get the perspective of home care and put it to work as ward nurses ,and (g) have hope to get to work as a home care nurse in the future.
CONCLUSIONS: Practice supervisors conducted the practicum having several expectations for students, it was short period, though. However there were some differences from the aim of study in home care nursing education core curriculum. Therefore it is necessary to consider and share the ideas to be able to perform better practice between the practice supervisors and the teachers.
