Summary

By examining the related materials of Namba Ryugen and Ohno Shosai and the activities of Shuto-Sekizen-sha in Tokyo and Shuto-Kanzen-sha in Okayama, it became clear that the conventional system of smallpox vaccination that had been used since the Edo period played an important role at least until around 1882.
