Summary

Narrative skills in early childhood are emphasized as language skills that can be linked to learning and literacy skills later in school. However, there is insufficient research on the development process of preschool children's narrative skills and assessment methods. We have created and analyzed a story-retelling task to examine the developmental process of narrative skills in preschoolers and methods of assessment (2019, et al). This study aimed to examine the development of narrative skills in typically developing Japanese preschoolers by adding the results of a new survey.
This study proposed an effective scoring method for assessing the development of story-retelling and presented basic data for the early detection of narrative skill problems. It was found that story-retelling develops significantly from 5 to 6 years of age and reaches a certain level at 6 years of age.
