We investigated the adverse effects of varying the position of double-lumen catheters (DLCs) for circulatory support during blood infusion from a blood pump. 27Fr DLCs were inserted into six adult goats (60.2±0.6 kg). In all cases, angiography confirmed that the DLC tip was located in the inferior vena cava and the outflow orifice in the right atrium. Sufficient oxygenation was achieved with bypass flow rates of 2 L/min or more. Support circulation was maintained for approximately 6-8 hours in each case. We suggest that particular attention should be paid to hematoma formation at blood pump flow rates of 3 L/min or higher.
