We propose a method for automatically extracting features that are effective for distinguishing characters with similar shapes using canonical discriminant analysis.
The effectiveness of this method was demonstrated by obtaining a recognition rate of 99.9% in a recognition experiment for nine type of Devanagari characters with very similar shapes.
