When the biocompatibility of the dialyzer and hemodialyzer filter is poor, complement and blood cell components are activated. The first half of this paper describes the mechanism of activation of complement, coagulation factors and blood cells, while the second half focuses on platelets and the factors of the dialysis membrane that affect platelet activity.
