Summary

The relationships of walking ability at normal and fast gaits to strength reduction in the ankle plantar flexors and knee extensor muscles were examined by measuring muscle strengths in the lower extremities and walking speeds ability in the same female population. It was found that the decline in walking ability was obviously associated with decreased muscle strength in the lower extremity. This result strongly suggests the importance of maintaining muscle strength in the lower extremities to maintain walking ability during aging.
