"Various aspects of British empire: Bristol merchants in the eighteenth century"

This paper examines the political and economic activities of Bristol Atlantic traders. The analysis of the letters and petitions of Bristol merchants shows that the British empire had two aspects. One was the empire of merchants: the equal and interactive world of trade built on personal connections and trust. The other was the mercantilist empire: the hierarchical and unilateral colonial system.
