Summary

Background: Competitive sports for individuals with mental disorders are the focus of growing attention in Japan. However, community-based, club-style teams comprised of individuals with mental disorders are difficult to maintain, and it is not uncommon for teams to disband.
Objective: The aim of this study is to identify the factors and supports that are necessary for individuals with mental disorders to maintain their community-based sports teams.
Method: Interview surveys were conducted using longitudinal semi-structured interviews.
Results: Interviews were conducted with 10 team representatives. Participants emphasized “continuing even when there aren’t many people ” and “not bearing the burden alone.” Further, they expected supporters to “act as a filter” and provide a “foundation of psychological support.”
Discussion: Symptoms of mental disorders fluctuate, and as such, in order to maintain sports teams, it is important that teams, at minimum, function as a “space that participants can join at any time,” and that participants do not bear the burdens  alone. Additionally, the role of supporters is to provide guidance when difficulties arise and to act as a foundation of psychological support.
