Summary

This study aims to investigate the characteristics of upper limb muscle strength in outrigger canoe (Out-C) athletes. The subjects included 9 Out-C athletes (average age 32.0 years) and 8 healthy adults (Control: Con, average age 24.8 years). Upper limb isokinetic muscle strength was measured using a pedal-driven strength measurement device. Peak torque (PT) values were evaluated at rotation speeds ranging from 30 rpm to 110 rpm.
Results showed that Out-C athletes had significantly higher neck and upper limb circumferences compared to the control group, indicating distinct morphological characteristics. Isokinetic muscle strength was also higher in Out-C athletes at all rotation speeds. Specifically, the PT values for left pedaling at 30 rpm and 90 rpm, and right pedaling at 90 rpm, were significantly higher in Out-C athletes compared to the control group. The rate of change in PT with increasing rotation speed was significantly lower in the control group at 30 rpm and 90 rpm for right pedaling.
This study highlights the unique upper limb muscle strength characteristics of outrigger canoe athletes, providing valuable insights for the evaluation of muscle strength in sports athletes.
