Summary

For respiratory support via ECMO, blood is drained, oxygenated, and returned to the body. This requires cannulation of the vena cava or right atrium. Our study investigated optimal cannula placement for gas exchange. We found that draining from the inferior vena cava and returning to the superior vena cava resulted in superior oxygenation and CO2 removal.
